Agency’s Space Assembly, Integration Lab Project Due In 2020 –Official

NASRDA

By Ijeoma Olorunfemi

Abuja -   The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) said on Thursday that its Assembly, Integration and Testing Lab (AITL) would be completed by year 2020.
Dr Felix Ale, Head, Media and Public Relations of the Agency, dropped the hint in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, said that the completion would facilitate the design and launch of satellite from Nigeria.
Ale described the AITL Centre as a hub for space technology development, where activities relating to space science and technology should be carried out.
He regretted that the setting up of the laboratory had been affected by shortage of funds for the past 12 years, resulting in the slow growth of space science programmes in Nigeria.
“We started the setting up of the lab 12 years ago; but due to paucity of funds, we have not been able to complete the project.
“Government is not relenting; we are making effort to let government realise the need for the immediate completion of this project.
“With the current partnerships we have, the understanding of the Federal Government and the attention given to space programme across the globe, I can assure you that the completion of the AITL centre will be achieved by 2020.
“If we are very serious with our desire to design and launch our own satellite here in Nigeria, the issue of ATIL centre must be given a pride of place.”
The official further said that the completion of the lab would foster revolutionalised technological development in the country, while the space agency would be a platform for critical sectors to come in.
He also said that having the lab in place would enable engineers of the space agency, who had been internationally trained on the platform, to practicalise their intellect.
The space agency, from inception, had launched five satellites for the country from Russia and China, and is making efforts toward designing, launching satellites from Nigeria.
