The Return Of Blackberry and What Users Should Expect from its Prices and Features

Since June 2016, Blackberry has been attempting a major comeback with the releases of android customized blackberry PRIV, Keyone in February 2017 and subsequently key2 in June 2018. These new flagships come with a lot of exciting features in order to beat or rather, rival the same competition that drove it out of the market.

Keyone was the first BlackBerry phone since the PRIV and the first from TCL to feature a physical QWERTY keyboard.  But then Key 2 succeeds keyone with a lot more to offer, quality wise.

Naturally, the Key2 has a physical keyboard, for better or worse, and leverages BlackBerry's Android improvements for enhanced security. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo. The users have been making exciting comments about them, especially about its double option of keyboard and screen touch -- quite a plus.

Let’s take a closer look at their features:

The Features of Blackberry PRIV

Camera And Storage

On the rear of BlackBerry Priv is provided a robust 18-megapixel shooter with Schneider-Kreuznach lens, Phase Detect Autofocus and optical image stabilisation (OIS).
This camera can be used to record stunning 4K videos at 30 frames per second.
A 5-megapixel front-facing camera is also expected on the device, which comes with 32 GB of internal storage. There is also a microSD card slot for memory expansion, up to 2TB.

Hardware Performance

BlackBerry Priv features a six-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, putting it in the same performance class as the LG G4 flagship. The chip is paired with ample 3 GB of RAM to enable responsive and smooth multitasking.

For the first time ever, BlackBerry completely ditches its own software for a rival offering. The Canadian company has chosen to power the Priv with Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) operating system. It is not clear for now if the OS will be upgradeable to the latest Android 6.0 (Marshmallow).

The Features of  Blackberry Keyone

Display And Cameras

BlackBerry KeyOne features the same touchscreen and physical QWERTY keyboard combo of the BlackBerry Priv. However, the keyboard does not slide-in like in the later.

This rigid keyboard design results in a much smaller screen in order to accommodate the QWERTY keys. BlackBerry KeyOne has a 4.5-inch IPS display with 1080 x 1620 pixels resolution.

Hardware And Software

BlackBerry KeyOne runs Android 7.1 (Nougat) on the 2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset with 3GB RAM. The Android smartphone sports 32GB built-in storage with support for up to 256GB memory card.

BlackBerry KeyOne supports dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, USB Type C, and NFC. The phone support download speeds of up to 450Mbps on 4G LTE with most LTE bands supported depending on region or country. In Nigeria it supports all the 4G networks including MTN, Etisalat, Glo, NTel, Smile, and InterC.

BlackBerry KeyOne is pre-loaded with the DTEK security software that was made popular by earlier phones by TCL like the BlackBerry DTEK50 and BlackBerry DTEK60. While TCL did the design and build, BlackBerry focused on the software.

Battery Life

The smartphone is powered by a 3505 mAh Battery with Fast Charging

The Features of KEY2

Hardware And Software

The smartphone has the same set of chipset as the Nokia 7 Plus and it had a good track record performance-wise. Talking about the processor, there is the Qualcomm SDM660 Snapdragon 660 with eight cores accompanied by an Adreno 512 GPU. This performs well enough working hand in hand with 6GB RAM and a 64GB or 128GB storage space from the box. A heavy modification has been made by BlackBerry to the Android 8.1 Oreo for more security and some handy shortcuts.

Battery and Camera

Unlike the old history of poor battery life in BlackBerry phones, the BlackBerry Key2 has a good battery life although it is most certainly not going to win any award. The smartphone is powered by a 3, 500mAh battery with fast charge also supported. It doesn’t have wireless charging, not like you are going to miss it that much with the/Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 on board.

BlackBerry joins in the dual camera wagon with the BlackBerry Key2 having the feature on the rear side. Camera performance has to be stellar at this price point and what the smartphone delivers is not particularly impressive. It shoots with a combo of two 12MP cameras, one having a f/1.8 aperture while the other has f/2.6. In the area of selfies, you have a single 8MP camera in charge and it has a quite underwhelming performance.

Price

The smartphone is available for sale in different online stores and retail hubs around for 235, 000 Naira depending on the location and deal

The Marketing Strength

The booking strength of the blackberry Key2  anticipate as a function of competitive win, a more positive brand reception, growing direct sales force and refined functions depicts its widely acceptance. This also shows enormous improvement from the PRIV, Keyone to its current Key2 and awaiting Key3 to be
launched in 2019.

Conclusion

You would agree that these new smartphones boast of exciting and improved features. The question is if the consumers are willing to look back at them, especially in African markets that have been saturated with cheaper but equally effective brands from China.

That aside, there is little doubt about how good these new blackberry devices are.
