Asus Zenfone 5Z Specs and Price

Asus is one of the OEMs that took part in this year’s MWC and it unveiled a number of smartphones among which is the Asus Zenfone 5Z flagship. Also in the list of smartphones released is the Asus Zenfone 5 and 5 Lite. With the number of high-end flagships from the likes of Sony, Samsung, Nokia and so on already announced, the Asus Zenfone 5Z has a fierce competition in its wake. Let’s have a look at the smartphone to see if it really is a force to reckon with.

Asus Zenfone 5Z Key Specs and Features

  • 6.2-inch, IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 1080 X 2246 pixels (403 ppi)

  • Octa-core Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 845 CPU with 8GB RAM

  • 256GB built-in storage and supports memory card up to 400GB

  • Dual 12MP rear camera and 8MP front camera

  • 4G LTE

  • Fingerprint sensor (rear)

  • 3, 300mAh non removable Li-ion battery

Asus Zenfone 5Z

Design and Display

The most apparent thing on the Asus Zenfone 5Z at first glance is it’s striking similarity with the iPhone X. This is largely due to the presence of the notched display featured here. However, the result is a smartphone with about 90% screen to body ratio which is definitely a good sight to behold. Like other flagships the bezels on the smartphone is greatly reduced and the back panel is also covered with glass. Unlike the iPhone X the bottom bezels are still present but only slightly.

One of the perks of the smartphone is its large display and how it manages to fit into the smartphone. The Asus Zenfone 5Z has a display of about 6.2-inch which is massive with a 19:9 aspect ratio. In addition to the large size, it is also quite colourful boasting of a 2246 X 1080 pixels and a 403 ppi pixel density.

Battery and Camera

While high-end flagships are not the type to pack a lot of battery power, the Asus Zenfone 5Z has just enough for a decent usage time. The smartphone packs a 3, 300mAh battery capacity in addition to the list of features it has. Even though there’s no wireless charging like you have in other flagships despite being made of glass. The smartphone supports the quick charge feature.

Camera-wise, the Asus Zenfone 5Z is well equipped for taking nice pictures. It also joins the league of dual rear camera devices as it features a dual 12MP snapper with features like the bokeh effect, beautification, scene detection to mention a few. For selfies, you’ve got an 8MP front camera for clearer pictures.

Hardware and Software

Moving on to the brains behind the smooth performance, the Asus Zenfone 5Z also makes use of the latest Qualcomm chipset same as the likes of Samsung Galaxy S9 and LG V30S ThinQ smartphone. Talking about the Octa-core Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 845 chipset alongside an Adreno 630 GPU.

The good run continues with a mouth watering 8GB RAM and a built-in storage of about 256GB which is about the most you can ask of a smartphone. It also supports a memory card up to 400GB if you wish to have more space which I doubt if most people would want that. Like most flagships launched this year, it has Android 8.0 Oreo pre-installed.

Pricing and Availability

After its announcement in this year’s MWC, the smartphone is scheduled to roll out later this in June with a price tag of $499 which is approximately 180, 000 naira.

Deal: SanDisk's 400GB microSD card drops to $190

If your phone has a microSD slot (which is quick becoming a rarity), you might want to check out the SanDisk 400GB microSD card. It started at a hefty $230, but you can now have it for $190.

B&H Photo Video, Amazon and NewEgg have it at that price. Best Buy is charging $200.

There are smaller cards too, the 256GB ones start at $100 if you don’t need so much storage (there are faster, pricier versions of the 256GB card too).

The 64GB and 128GB cards get you the most bang for your buck, we did the math:

16 GB$9.900.619
32 GB$11.990.375
64 GB$18.990.297
128 GB$37.990.297
200 GB$62.990.315
256 GB$99.990.391
400 GB$189.990.475

Social Media Week kicks off with future of broadcast, content creation

The much awaited Social Media Week (SMW) Lagos has kicked off in earnest as experts and professionals from various segments of the Nigerian economy converge for a one whole week of knowledge sharing.

The event which is in its fifth year has brought together thought leaders, key stakeholders and the public to explore issues that resonates with the modern society. In particular, SMW has served as the largest platform for digital practitioners to provide knowledge on trends and innovations that are influencing the way people do business. Over 12,000 people from across the country and beyond Nigeria gather to participate in the event.

This year’s edition kicked off on Monday with sessions on digital content creation, how music and edutainment is changing the face of entertainment; financial inclusion; public relations and branding; future of work and data strategy.

One quick thing to notice in the 2018 edition is the attention given to master classes. The SMW organisers have made sure that conversations are not just restricted to the usual conference halls. There are smaller rooms that can fit in 20 to 25 people where experts and professionals can sit round beautiful sofas to engage. For instance, the Gidi Legendary Photography class on photography and social media as a tool for conflict resolution took place in one of these rooms. Conversations in these master classes are more informal than a participant will find in the conference halls.

Another thing to notice at the SMW is the increase in technological innovations and products by most of the financial service institutions that are displaying their products at the Landmark Event Center, venue of the Social Media Week Lagos.

Entrepreneurs with innovative ideas also have an opportunity to pitch their ideas live at the #STAGE15 inside the venue.

At one of the sessions ‘Staying Profitable in the Time of Aggregators’ experts deliberated on the originality of content and the need to have a content aggregator company that can partner with individual content creators who can get paid, recognised and fairly conditioned for success for use of their contents.

Social media publishing faces a challenge of ethics and value. Many of the people publishing contents on the various social media platforms flout value and ethical policies guiding the profession. Plagiarism has become rampant on the platforms.

There is no doubt that social media is become the preferred medium for news and information as people’s attention span continue to decline in the digital age. It has become difficult to hold people’s attention; hence content creators are compelled to use mediums that people are more comfortable with.

“If you make your contents to suit your audience, it will be easy for them to understand the subtle message at the background of the material,” said Femi Bakare, CEO of Kraks TV.

Kemi Lala Akindoju, CEO of The Make it Happen Productions (TMIHP) noted that content creators must diver from the norm if they hope to produce unique stories that can influence the society.

“You need to give people what they want without forgetting to pass the real message intended for them, so they do not pick the wrong perspective in a bid to complicate it,” she said.

At the Future of Broadcast Media session, John Momoh, CEO of Channels Television disclosed that the station is planning to integrate artificial intelligence.

Today’s broadcast media, he said, must look beyond just being the first to break the news. The prevalence of fake news has made it more critical to verify the source.

“The biggest disruption to media landscape is that, right now, you have to go after your consumers,” Momoh said.

To achieve this the station is planning on raising a new crop of broadcasters who equipped to interact with multichannel online and offline that the company plans to launch very soon.Businessday.

Uber: Providing Technology For Guaranteed Safety

In recent times, safety has increasingly become a topical issue in both offline and online discussions. Technology has opened up new means of economic and business opportunities for many millennials but it has also brought with it some concerns about how safe and secure users are.

Uber confirms to BusinessDay that through constantly evolving and cutting-edge technology, they have put in place safety features that help improve the overall experience for passengers. Some of which are:

Know your ride: Riders should always take the time to review the safety features available to them in the app. It is important for them to remember that Uber rides can only be requested through the Uber app, so users should never accept street hail solicitations from those claiming to be with Uber.

When riders are ready to request a ride, it is important for them to avoid spending unnecessary time outside alone with their phone in their hand. Instead, it best for them to wait indoors until the app shows that their driver has arrived.

Know your driver: When a driver accepts a riders’ request, the rider is able to see the drivers first name, photo, license plate number, type of vehicle as well as the vehicle colour. Riders are able to see this from within the app itself – on the map. The rider should always make sure that those match before they enter the vehicle and ensure they ask for the driver’s name when they open the door. In a case where the inside of the car is dark, riders are encouraged to politely ask the driver to switch on the inner light to help confirm identity.

Sharing Trip Details: Uber’s technology has made it possible for all trips to be tracked using GPS. While en route the rider is able to monitor their own trip in the app as well as share their Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) with their loved ones. This will help friends and family keep track of where they are on the trip and they can do this without even downloading the Uber app!

In-app Help: The tool is designed to help riders get a prompt response to their queries in the shortest time possible. The support system can be accessed by navigating to the “Help’’ section on the menu, which helps riders and driver-partners alike to communicate their concerns they might have during a trip and get an instant response.

Follow Intuition: When using Uber the rider should be aware of their surroundings, if they feel like something’s not right they should trust their instincts and use their best judgement. Riders should be cautious when sharing any personal information and should always confirm that the driver-partner is in fact the one they saw on the app, and if they ever feel they’re in an emergency situation, they are advised to alert the local emergency services immediately.

Give Feedback: Riders should always give feedback on how their trip went. This helps improve the Uber experience for everyone, maintain a high quality service and provide accountability. Uber has a 24/7 global support team which reviews the feedback and follows up with appropriate action regarding reports of conduct that violates the Community Guidelines.

Uber says it constantly develops new technologies to ensure safety before, during, and after every ride which was not possible before.  Uber is committed to continuously help in educating riders and driver-partners on how to use the technology by providing the tips to improve their safety on every ride.

Astonishment: Xiaomi Mi 7 To Adopt Wireless Charging

Xiaomi's upcoming Mi 7 flagship may support wireless charging. Speculation was high following Xiaomi's enrollment in the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) in Sept '17 that it's Mi 7 flagship would support wireless charging utilizing the Qi standard. Its expected to feature a glass back which allows wireless charging.

Sources further claim that the Mi 7 will support charging up to 7.5W, identical to Apple's latest iPhones following a firmware update post-launch. Reports suggest that Xiaomi may feature the same Broadcom chip and NXP transmitter as Apple to ensure quality and supply.

If proved accurate it's likely that the Mi 7 has adopted the Qi Specification Version 1.1 which supports wireless charging up to 7.5W.

Version 1.2 supports 15W for faster charging but results in higher heat generation. Our take is that by topping out at 7.5W allows manufacturers to ensure heat is managed while learning what thermal management needs to be undertaken if/when they adopt the 15W standard.

The Xiaomi Mi 7 is expected to feature a Samsung-manufactured 6.01-inch screen with 18:9 aspect ratio, dual 16MP cameras, 6GB or 8GB RAM and will be powered by Snapdragon 845 SoC.

Originally predicted to have a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, another rumor suggests that it may utilize an under-display fingerprint sensor.

6 Incredible 2-Burner Tabletop Gas Cookers for Better Cooking: No. 3 Is A plus

Cooking your next meal does not have to be an elaborate affair. You could keep things simple yet efficient by opting for 2-burner tabletop gas cookers. They are compact, fit on your traditional kitchen cabinet and overall, are very reliable when it comes to gas consumption.

Those and much more make these options some of the hottest selling home appliances on the market.

Should you be in the market for a unit to call your own too, we have come up with some of the best 2-burner tabletop gas cookers that will make your kitchen experience a delight.

1 Universal Tabletop Two Burner Gas Cooker

Universal Tabletop Two Burner Gas Cooker

Universal accepts that you will be addressed according to how you are dressed. For that reason, they have made their Tabletop Two Burner Gas Cooker a real beauty to behold.

But then, beauty does not get the food done. That is why they have also built the unit with an elegant stainless-steel body that can withstand rust from having liquids pour on it. There is also support for rigorous cooking (as is common in the African kitchen), an auto-ignition technology that helps you save massively on matchboxes and two efficient burners for faster cooking.

The unit is easy to install for use and uninstall for cleaning. It also works with the least gas supply, helping you use your refills for longer. With controls for adjusting flame when cooking too, there is no going wrong with this pick

2 Century Gas Tabletop Cooker CGS-201-A

Century Gas Tabletop Cooker CGS-201-A

Century promises that their CGS-201-A unit comes with one of the sturdiest builds on the market. More than that though is the promise of a high effectiveness in gas use and consumption.

The tabletop comes with two burners to help you multitask better to get food done faster. The good news is that none of these burners operates at a lesser efficiency than the other, giving you the same output across boards.

Additionally, the infrared burners are easy to set up and maintain too.

3 Binatone Gas Cooker SSGC-0002

Binatone Gas Cooker SSGC-0002

Binatone is already a household name and they made a kitchen statement with the SSGC-0002 model. Requiring neither batteries nor matches for ignition, the silver-coloured unit was made of a stainless-steel build.

The steel has been evened out and glossed in such a way that it doesn’t retain water that would have otherwise led to rust. The gas cooker ensures very clean cooking, burning a highly efficient flame without leaving soot behind.

The portable nature of this cooker makes sure you can place it almost anywhere in your kitchen and move it around later. Easy to set up, operate and manage, a simple wipe with a wet napkin after us will get the unit clean again.

4 AKAI Tabletop Gas Cooker (+ Grill)

AKAI Tabletop Gas Cooker (+ Grill)

We have been talking about 2-burner tabletop gas cookers, but AKAI’s Tabletop Gas Cooker brings a twist to the list. On first sighting the unit, some of the things you will notice are the double burner stoves. The silver colour is also a shimmering delight, but none of those compares to the extra feature – a grill.

AKAI understands that you might want more than the normal, everyday meal. That is why they made a provision for you to barbecue along with your cooking. The good news is that you don’t need to make a special fire to get the grill running. With the same gas-saving technology on the burner, the grill has also been optimised to get your food done the right way with the least pollution and energy consumption

5 Nulek Table Glass Top Gas Cooker

Nulek Table Glass Top Gas Cooker

The Nulek Table Glass Top Gas Cooker has a sturdy design no doubt, but we won’t recommend it for use in a household with kids. Otherwise, the glass top build is a premium feature that should be a part of your kitchen. It is an ideal pick for fancy restaurant owners too.

Going under the surface, the double infrared burner plates make use of auto-ignition technology to start up. The pans have been specially treated for rust. Spillage of liquids will have nothing on your burner stoves.

The lightweight unit takes up as little space as possible and for that, does not even sacrifice on quality. Again, no burner on this piece is faster than the other. They are both equipped to burn at the same minimum and maximum rates which can be adjusted with the help of designated knobs.

6 Restpoint Glass Tabletop Gas Cooker

Restpoint Glass Tabletop Gas Cooker

We agree that what a gas cooker needs to do is get your food cooked, but other features of the Restpoint Glass Tabletop Gas Cooker are equally worth appreciating.

Starting with the outside, one will find a unit built with refined stainless-steel material. In turn, that gives the tabletop gas cooker its elegant look and excellent durability. It burns with a bright blue flame to ensure none of your cooking appliances gets coated black with soot.

Finished with a tempered glass top, the auto-igniting unit is highly portable and saves you a ton of gas.

Considering the variety of offerings this list gives you, it is hard to disagree that they are great picks from the league of the very best 2-burner tabletop gas cookers out there. Some with a grill, a few with premium glass top builds and a host of them coming with auto-ignition, which one do you feel your kitchen calling out to right now?

Sony officially unveils its new Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact flagships

Sony took the wrapper off its latest flagship pair at the Barcelona venue today, turning quite a few heads in the process. The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact represent a brand new look for Sony's mobile line and a pretty bold one at that.

Curved sides, arching backs and 2.5D Gorilla Glass 5 fronts are at the core of what Sony is calling its "Ambient Flow" design. Symmetry is still a central part of it all, but gone are the sharper corners and edgy forms of the past, replaced by what the Japanese giant believes to be a naturally fitting shape for the human hand. The fingerprint reader is now mounted on the back and comes with the promise of no more legal issues in the US.

Both the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact feature a Gorilla Glass 5 front, an anti-twist metal frame and bezel underneath and IP65/68 rating. The back on the bigger one is also Gorilla Glass 5, making for an interesting reflective, but quite slippery and fingerprint-friendly surface. The Compact substitutes that for a polycarbonate blend, with a mat and significantly easier to clean surface.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact
Sony Xperia XZ2 • Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact

And the potentially polarizing changes don't stop there. Both the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact come with trendy new, extra-tall, 18:9 displays - 5.7-inch and 5.0-inch diagonals, respectively. Both pushing pixels at a native FullHD+ resolution, which represents a step up for the Compact, over its XZ1 Compact predecessor. Sony's new panels are also HDR certified and support the BT.2020 standard, which their cameras can now record in as well.

That camera in question is the same 19MP, Motion Eye, 1/2.3" Sony IMX400, f/2.0 unit from the Xperia XZ1 generation, complete with all the familiar added features, like 5-axis stabilization, predictive hybrid laser/phase detection/contrast AF, burst AF, IR sensor for white balance, LED flash, dedicated hardware shutter key. However, through a collaboration with Qualcomm on the Snapdragon 845 ISP and the software to go with it, the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact offer a new generation BIONZ image processing algorithm/architecture. It is said to help with overall color rendition, as well as detail reproduction and noise handling in low-light environments.

As for new camera features, both phones can record 4K HDR video - potentially a world first on the smatphone scene. It uses the same BT.2020 color standard, in a HEVC 10-bit container - ideal for watching on Sony's new HDR panels. Slow-motion video has seen a bump up in resolution as well and can now be recorded in [email protected], as well. The only caveat being that the size of Sony's custom ISP RAM buffer hasn’t grown, so you can only record 1080p slow-mo for half the duration of 720p.

There are some notable changes in the audio department as well. First up, sadly, there is no 3.5mm audio jack on either phone. Quite the letdown, considering the beefy profile that comes with the new design (153 x 72 x 11.1mm for the XZ2 and 135 x 65 x 12.1mm for the Compact). Stereo speakers, however, are still present and even 20% louder compared to the XZ1. The bigger Xperia XZ2 also has a new Dynamic Vibration system. It leverages an advanced, wide-frequency vibration motor to simulate bass in music and enhance notification vibrations. The presence and intensity of the vibration can be controlled on a per-app basis.

Sadly, the XZ2 Compact lacks the Dynamic Vibration system - one of its very few hardware differences, compared to the regular XZ2. Another one being the lack of QI Wireless charging, which is present on its sibling. The only other major difference is LTE connectivity. The regular XZ2 is rated for Cat.18 speeds, while the smaller one has to live with Cat.15.

Other than that, the pair are identical in hardware prowess and are based around the new Snapdragon 845 beastly chipset, coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of UFS storage, expandable through microSD. The latter is on a hybrid tray, so you do have to choose between two SIM cards, or extra storage. Other shared specs include Wi-Fi ac, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0,GPS and GLONASS and USB 3.1 Type-C. The smaller size of the Compact did slash the battery capacity a bit, bringing it down to 2870mAh, compared to 3180mAh on the regular XZ2.

The Xperia XZ2 is available in Liquid Black, Liquid Silver, Deep Green (Petroleum Blue) and Ash Pink colors, while the XZ2 Compact has Black, White Silver, Moss Green and Coral Pink dyes. Both are expected to hit shelves some time in late March or early April, with no world on pricing yet.

Joining them at the announcement event were two types of official covers - the Style Cover Touch and Style Cover Stand in a plethora of colors. Also, a new Y-style Type-C adapter for simultaneous charging and audio out, which will be bundled with every XZ2 and XZ2 Compact unit. Other announcements include a pair of headphones- the wired/wireless SBH90C and the STH40D. Also, a WCH20 wireless QI charging dock, with a detachable stand and both horizontal and vertical modes of operation.

Alcatel 1X Specs and Price

Google has made another run at the former Android One OS for entry level smartphones which was not too successful the last time. Now under the Android Go banner with some smartphones set to release in the MWC 2018. However, the Alcatel 1X smartphone has already been announced by Alcatel. The entry level smartphone will be shipping with Android 8.0 Oreo (Go edition) from the box.

Where to Buy Alcatel 1X

Jumia Nigeria – See Offers | Jumia Kenya – See Offers | Jumia Ghana – See Offers

Alcatel 1X Key Specs and Features

  • 5.3-inch, IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 480 X 960 pixels (203 ppi)

  • Android 8.0 Oreo (Go Edition)

  • Quad-core MediaTek MT6739 CPU with 1GB RAM

  • 16GB built-in storage, up to 32GB with a memory card

  • 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera

  • 4G LTE Data

  • 2, 460 non removable Li-ion battery

Alcatel 1X Android Go Smartphone

Design and Display

The smartphone looks long due to the 18:9 which is rapidly becoming a thing in smartphones of all categories. The upper and bottom are trimmed to accommodate more screen space. At first glance, the Alcatel 1X doesn’t quite look like an entry level smartphone which is shows its build quality.

Much like other entry level smartphone, the Alcatel 1X is quite on a low resolution display. It ships with a 480 X 960 pixels on a 5.3-inch LCD panel. It is not much but it is acceptable at the entry level and enough for day to day usage.

Battery and Camera

Entry level smartphones are generally known for their not too large battery capacity. This is largely due to the fact not much power is needed considering the little specs it offers. On that note, the Alcatel 1X smartphone sports only a 2, 460mAh Li-ion battery.

For an entry level smartphone, the 13MP rear camera with flash featured here is a good enough feature. Also, the Alcatel 1X comes with a 5MP front camera that should take some decent selfies. Although, not much is expected for a smartphone with a low budget price.

Hardware and Software

Not much can be expected from the Alcatel 1X and it doesn’t give much too. With an entry level Quad-core MediaTek MT6739 processor running at 1.3GHz a decent performance is expected. On the graphics front, the smartphone has a PowerVR GE8100 GPU.

Typically, the Alcatel 1X smartphone has a 1GB internal memory and a 16GB storage space inside with support for a MicroSD up to 16GB. The interesting feature here has said earlier is the Go Edition Android 8.0 Oreo tweaked to give a more smooth performance on the smartphone.

Pricing and Availability

The Alcatel 1X smartphone is due to release on April and is said to be sold for an equivalent of 36, 000 Naira for the single sim model and about 40, 000 Naira for the dual SIM model. NAIJATECHGUIDE.

Samsung CEO on foldable Galaxy X: We're ensuring it's no gimmick

Last we heard, there were reports that Samsung showcased its foldable display phone - rumored to be called Galaxy X - to a selected few back in January at this year's CES show. Now, the company's CEO DJ Koh has provided a little more info on the project.

In an interview after unveiling the hot new Galaxy S9 series smartphones, the executive said they are working to ensure that the handset isn't just a gimmick. "I need complete confidence that we're delivering the best user experience when we're launching a new category," he said.

Koh didn't offer any details on the device's launch time frame, and also refused to offer more info on the phone, saying he'll do that when time comes to show off the handset. During the interview, he also revealed the Bixby-powered smart speaker will arrive "later this year." Gsmarena.

It was released alongside the bigger variant, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. The smartphone comes with an improved camera but with about the same features as the former Samsung Galaxy S8. It also has a similar look with its predecessor but with an increased AI presence for more features. Join me as we exhume the features on this smartphone one by one.

Samsung Galaxy S9

Design and Display

The Samsung Galaxy S9 looks very much like its predecessor maintaining the nice premium build as seen before.  It is also made up of a combination of metal and glass to give a smartphone that is both classy and stylish. However, it is a tad thicker and heavier too which makes it feel more premium when held knowing fully well you are holding a 9th generation Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Although the significant change here is the fingerprint sensor which was criticized for previouly being in an awkward position at the side of the camera, has been relocated to the side but is still part of the camera module which is in a unusual.

The top bezel also appears to be a bit slimmer than before with more conscious effort from Samsung to hide the sensors more. The smartphone maintains the 3.5mm audio jack some premium flagships has been leaving out lately which is a nice thing.

One of the great things about the Samsung Galaxy S8 flagship is its rich vibrant display which is the same except for being a bit smaller at 5.8-inch. There is still the 18.5:9 aspect ratio as before which allows you to have more screen space without being unnecessarily large. To conserve power, the screen runs on a full HD resolution by default which you might decide to change if you want to the maximum 2960 X 1440 pixels (570 PPI). Also, you’ve got that curved display with nothing in the way at the sides which is sort of a charmer if you look at it. The smartphone offers Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection against scratches and easy damage.

Battery and Camera

As much as we would have loved to see a larger battery capacity the Samsung Galaxy S9 only comes with a 3, 000mAh battery. This is sort of problem with its predecessor but the setup conserves power and the quick charge is still present using the USB Type-C connector.

There is more AI integration into the camera featured on the smartphone which is more of a thing in most high-end flagship trying to offer the next milestone capturing experience. Additionally, you have a new 12MP tear camera with the DRAM chip mounted on top. This deliver power directly to the camera, hence, a much quicker processing speed. Another great thing, is the dual aperture technology which switches between a f/1.5 and f/2.4.

This is dependent on the brightness of the environment, it utilizes a smaller aperture when there is much light to give a better picture and then to the bigger one when there’s less light. Also one of the thing paraded at the MWC 2018 event, is the slow motion capturing up to 960fps at 720p. While this is cool, the problem is the timing to capture the really fast actions. The solution is the motion detector which automatically starts the recording once motion is detected.

Unlike the older model, the Samsung Galaxy S9 comes with a better selfie experience by help reducing noise in pictures taken. The smartphone recruits a 8MP sensor for a better wide angle selfies. Another highlight is the Bixby Vision which helps to translate live texts written in a foreign language to your native language. Samsung also stated the camera can help you estimate the amount of calories in your food although how it does this is still unclear.

Hardware and Software

Under the hood, there are two different options based on your region ofcos. While let’s say in the USA, there are some carriers that might not work with a certain chipset. To avoid this, the Samsung is rolling out with two different SoCs. For users in USA and China you have an Octa-core Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 845 processor with an Adreno 630 GPU. For the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa) there’s an Octa-core Exynos 9810 chipset with a Mali-G72 MP18 GPU.

In segue, the smartphone features a 4GB RAM which is enough for a smooth performance in my own opinion. You also have a 64GB internal storage space with variants of 128GB and 256GB respectively. The smartphone supports a memory card up to 200GB for more storage space. It runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with the Samsung Experience UI formerly referred to as TouchWiz.

Pricing and Availability

The smartphone has announced is available for pre-order but will not be rolling out until March 16 which is just a few weeks away for £739 which is about 373, 000 naira. This much cheaper than the iPhone X, Apple’s flagship.

The Ultimate Guide to Kids Binoculars

Are you planning to buy a new binocular for your kid? Whether you are buying the first pair of another pair, there are several things that you need to know so that you can get the right sized binocular. For kids to enjoy using a pair of binoculars, you should look for a lightweight model that fits well on their small faces. This guide will help you pick a perfect binocular for your little one who loves adventure.

Before you buy a binocular for your kid, it is crucial to check the magnification. You should look for a binocular with a low magnification so that kids can enjoy using them. Having a binocular with a high magnification is not recommended for kids because they bring about image shakiness especially when there is a small movement. This makes it very hard for kids to get the right focus. The recommended magnification for kids should be 8x and below.

There are high chances that kids will drop their binoculars when using. If you want a model that will last long, look for a binocular that features a durable construction. The rubber coating should be strong enough such that it protects the devices from bumps and scratches. You can also look for a binocular that is waterproof.

Most parents find it hard to get the right sized kids binocular because kids have small eye spacing. The best binocular for kids should provide them with a perfect fit to make them feel comfortable when using. For older kids from the age of 7-16 years, you can buy them some adult-sized binoculars that will fit them if they are serious about outdoor activities.

Objective lens diameter

Just like other adult binoculars, an objective lens with a larger diameter is great because it provides brighter images. In as much as a binocular with a larger lens makes it easy for kids to view, you should also know that it makes the binocular large and heavy.

Image clarity and brightness

You can look for models with fully multi-coated lenses that provide crystal clear images. They are also great when it comes to light transmission. If your kid is into bird watching, look for a binocular with a non-reflective film on the two sides because they transmit better light with less reflection.

Avoid toy binoculars

Avoid buying toy binoculars. Your kid needs a binocular similar to that of an adult when it comes to performance. Whether they are using it for hunting, studying nature or bird watching, you should buy them a real kid-sized binocular. They deserve to enjoy the great features found in adult binoculars like proper optical alignment, glass lens, magnification and much more. Toy binoculars do not provide these features hence the kid might not enjoy using them.

The price of kids binocular vary based on the brand and the features included.  You can get quality kids binoculars below 100 bucks while other models cost more than that. It also depends on how the kid intends to use the binocular, their age and the amount of money you can afford to acquire kids binocular.

Field of view

A binocular with a wider field of view makes viewing easy for kids. Always compare the field of view of different binoculars and choose the one with a larger field of view. Babygearspro share a details guide.

Final Words

If you are an outdoor enthusiast and want to share some amazing memories with your kids, get the best binoculars for kids. Kids will enjoy using the binoculars and this makes their adventure complete. If you are thinking of buying kids binocular, the above tips I have covered will help you pick a binocular that is best suited for little observers. Keep them in mind and you can confident of getting top-notch kids binocular. Naijatechguide.

The listing reveals that the new midranger will come with Android Oreo. Other specs are rumored to include 12 MP + 5 MP dual camera, 16 MP selfie snapper, and around 3,000 mAh battery cell. Cash Vault – Escrow Service For Payments

Of recent, word has been spreading about a startup called Safeonline that built a service that merchants within the eCommerce space could use to support pay on delivery orders; did some research on them to find out who they were, very secretive lot. Group of developers turned entrepreneurs but the glue holding everything is an Interswitch alumnus who started his working career as a developer transitioned into product management and finally ending up as Fintech start up.

So what is Cash Vault, what does it do?

Had to do some research first to fully understand definition of escrow, it was then I could fully appreciate exactly what Cash Vault was doing because on first impression thought it was another payment gateway. So what it does is to hold funds debited from a customer for a specified duration so merchant can deliver item customer wants to purchase,  if merchant cannot make the delivery funds returned back to the customer.

So how do I use it?

Cash Vault is an API stack of methods that can be used to debit a customer and redeem a code called vault code to disburse funds to account. In summary that is the core element of the service but it is the addition of the other features that make things quite interesting.

So a merchant can assume full control of their own settlement; you can determine when funds is remitted to your account via playing around with a method tagged disbursement amount; also can determine your sharing with no restrictions on sharing parties.

In addition to this merchant can also apply cancellation fees by setting unique attribute for this condition to true in method tagged reservation request, same method used to debit a customer.

Let’s get advanced

When reviewing the rest of the API methods which is catered to mostly reporting noticed two methods Hold Balance and Refund Balance and a little bit of head scratching started; what do I need these two for?

So after some questioning and critique on extra information not being clear enough this is what I came up with.

Merchant wallet to hold proceed of funds for successfully delivered goods if merchant opts not to want it processed for settlement, “am like seriously you will want that” but the second use case for this is for failed payout attempts which made sense. So if merchant funds cannot be disbursed to designated account credited back to merchant hold balance to support a retry at a later time or disburse to a different account.

Cancellation fees merchant applies stored in this wallet so when customer refunds occur value returned back less specified fee.

What kind of Support do I get?

API documentation is readily available and you can even play around with some of the methods without writing any form of code; there is also a support blog where you can drop questions which will be responded to by someone within implementation support.

Service supports JSON or XML request payloads so you can consume either as REST or SOAP but I think they are aware no one going near writing code to support SOAP and most of the references within the documentation strictly REST. You can still find information on the WSDL if you are the old school type within the support blog.

No extended support for any checkout management software as of the time I reviewed and if you field requests for sample code likely to be referred to POSTMAN.

What else is there?

Cash Vault comes with an administration dashboard that a merchant can use to enjoy the full benefits of the API stack without bothering about integrating all the service methods sticking with the simple payment gateway type of integration to just support customer debits.

Signed up as a merchant to get a sneak peak of what it looks like

Cash Vault Escrow Dashboard from SafeOnline

  1. The pic above is the dashboard from where you can create an app to get test credentials to simulate on your own staging environment

  2. Generate a Client key when you want to migrate your application to production

  3. Log a support ticket for issue resolution.

  4. Notification dropdown to display details of recent activities on your merchant account

You still get a daily overview on your orders obviously as you would expect still yet to process any transactions but it is clearly descriptive.

Then there is a user management console needed some assistance in understanding the roles under the option dialog for creating users; so will share

  • Business Owner: If you signed up you will likely assume this role and designated sole access to view security token tagged secure code used for authorization of all payouts if your orders not passed for settlement automatically.

  • Admin: If you are the busy type you can delegate task of managing users as well as generating client secret key to someone else. For good reasons only admin and business owner have access to generating client secret key for production, one click of that bottom on the dashboard and your key details updated implying if you do not update it also within your code likely to get a lot access denied responses.

  • Operations: This role for support representatives on the merchant side to view reports, process redemption of vault code and process payouts. They still need to get authorization code from business owner though.

  • Dispatch: The role strictly for the dispatch rider if a merchant has one responsible for delivering goods and collecting vault code from customers.

With the exception of the business owner each role has different views with varying access to different functionality; for example dispatch and admins cannot process payouts so you might need some time playing around with the roles. If DIY not for you no shame in asking for assistance serious.

Cash Vault Escrow Service

This view provides detailed reporting on your orders with some spice of analytics to benchmark performance within your desired duration. You can also redeem customer orders when it is still pending delivery as well as retrieve customer mobile number to communicate necessary information.

Cash Vault Settlement

This view just provides more reporting but this time on the disbursement leg; provides information on remitted funds, funds pending processing for remittance, breakdown of cumulative refund balance and mini statement for hold balance. You can also download reports as well.

Seems very comprehensive but the best part is that the whole application is responsive so you still have access to all these information on the go.

CashVault DashboardCashVault Reservation

Finally need to address the disclaimer you will see on the dashboard landing page citing subscription fee will apply after three months, so I asked questions. After the freebie period you will need to pay a subscription fee of N3000 monthly to still enjoy full access but with restricted access you can still create app for testing, generate client secret key for production and submit tickets for issue resolution. Snapchat Partners Giphy To Provide Editable GIF Stickers

Snapchat has announced that it was partnering with Giphy to provide clippable GIFs to adorn the Snaps that users send to friends or post to public Stories. This happened not too long after Snapchat came under heavy criticism for its new confusing interface after a recent update.

Interestingly, Instagram was first one to offer insertable GIFs into Instragram Direct messages and Instagram Stories. What makes it even more interesting is that Giphy will provide these GIFs for Snaps, which is exactly the same provider for Instagram's Stories' GIFs.

This move just screams "me too". Snapchat didn't even try to do anything differently than Instagram's Giphy integration. It knows that it has a following and is trying to get frustrated users back onto the platform.

Aside from this, Snapchat had also promised that it would address the redesign and offer new Tabs to the "Friends and Discover" section of the app. This sounds like Snapchat is still adamant about keeping a new design, which is rolling out on iOS before making it to Android over the next couple of weeks.

Snapchat has come under a lot of criticism for its recent Snapchat update where it merged individual Snap conversations together with the friend's individual stories, making it more confusing to find your friend's most recent conversation while making Snapchat's poorly curated content more visible.

The update was so bad that a petition was signed by 1.2 million Snapchat users to bring the old interface back. One of the Kardashians even expressed her disappointment with the platform's update.

Are you a Snapchat user? Would you rather Snap bring the old interface back or are you open to its promised improvement of the new update?

N200m solar hybrid mini grid was commissioned in Ogun state by Rubitec Nig Ltd

Rubitec Nigeria Ltd has commissioned a N200 million solar hybrid mini grid for Gbamugbamu village, Ijebu east central LCDA capable of providing power for over 3,500 residents of the community.

The project is not a contract, but an investment by the company supported by the Ogun State Government, Nigeria Energy Support Programme (NESP), European Union, GIZ, and USAID explains Bolade Soremekun the company’s CEO during the launch on February 9.

“It is a N200 million investment comprising 50% grant from GIZ, 39% loan from Bettervest of Germany, and 11% equity from Rubitec Nigeria Ltd. It is by such investment that mini grid projects can be sustainable. The project must earn profit for its investors, pay back its loans, and justify the grants that come from EU tax payers’ funds,” said Soremekun.

Rubitec emerged successful out of 70 companies that responded to a request for proposal by The Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in close collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Power (FMP) and five (5) selected State Governments (Cross River, Niger, Ogun, Plateau and Sokoto). Winrock, the implementing partner of USAID, also supported the project by promoting access to finance workshops and initiatives.

“We were still sceptical, but we went along and began to develop the business plan, and through several workshops over the next two years, we developed the many skills – technical, business development, financial and business modelling to build a mini grid.

“We spent time in several finance workshops supported by our partnering agencies and presented our project to local and international banks and financial institutions. With time we were able to put together a financing package that consisted of our equity, a loan from a Bettervest, a German Crowdfunding organization, and a Grant from GIZ. Winrock/USAID provided the crucial connection with Bettervest. We thank all our partners also for the technical training our staff received both at home and abroad throughout the development phase,” says Soremekun.

The village of Gbamugbamu has a population of 3,500 people. The village is well organized with a Baale, sectioned into zones with a leader for each zone. It is mainly an agrarian village growing and processing economic crops including cocoa, palm oil, plantain, kolanuts, cassava, yam, and maize.

“Our mini grid will serve 487 metered customers, with 462 1phase connections, and 25 3phase customers. The PV system will generate >190,000kWh/year of electricity, transmitted and distributed across 5.2 Km of grid for different categories of consumers – businesses and households. We have installed pre-paid meters. We encourage the people of Gbamugbamu to pay for their electricity as this will make the project sustainable.

“The village has grown rapidly, from the time of our first research up until now. We shall be deploying very soon to connect the new customers and houses being added as we speak. The Baale, Chief Adekunle Fayomi and his team have been very cooperative, and have supported all the work we have done,” says Soremekun.Businessday.

Nigeria Not Found On The list of 84 countries expanding 4G LTE technology

A new data that show that African countries like Morocco, Cote d’Ivoire, South Africa, Tunisia, Egypt and Algeria are doing well in terms of 4G availability and speed have Nigeria conspicuously absent.

4G stands for the fourth generation of data technology for cellular networks – following 3G, the third generation. LTE stands for Long Term Evolution and is short for a technical process for high-speed data for phones and other mobile devices. The specification for 4G standards was decided in March 2008, by the International Telecommunications Union-Radio (ITU-R), a United Nations official agency for all manner of information and communication.

The ITU-R decided that LTE, the name given to the technology used in pursuit of those standards, could be labelled as 4G, if it provided a substantial improvement over the 3G technology. A user that requires a lot of data each month or relies on their smartphone or tablet to browse the internet, 4G LTE is usually the best choice.

Telecommunication companies in Nigeria such as Spectranet, Smile, iPNx, Glo and MTN, have been rolling out 4G LTE internet services to subscribers. However, availability to more consumers and speed of the services has yet to be felt. Broadband is also growing at a very snail pace. In 2017, fixed broadband grew only 1 percent.

Customers experiences of the existing 4G LTE services mostly negative puts a question on the claims of most of the telecom companies.

According to OpenSignal the company that conducted the 4G LTE research and released it in February 2018, how fast a country’s 4G speed is can depend on many factors including how much spectrum is devoted to LTE, whether it has adopted new 4G technologies like LTE Advanced, how densely networks are built and how much congestion is on those networks. Countries with the fastest speeds tend to be the ones that have built LTE-Advanced networks and have a large proportion of LTE-Advanced capable devices.

In terms of availability, Morocco with 69.34 percent to rank 60th on the globe, led other countries on the African continent. Cote d’Ivoire followed closely at 69.30 percent (61st). OpenSignal measured availability by tracking the proportion of time users have access to a particular network.

On the whole, consumers in five countries had access to an LTE connection more than 90 percent of the time – up from a mere two countries just three months ago.

While nations like Singapore, Netherlands, Norway and South Korea occupy the top four positions of 4G speed in the world, South Africa leads the rest of Africa as the country with the fastest 4G speed.

“There is no hard and fast rule, though. Countries can have highly accessible networks, but their speeds can be limited by capacity constraints. Meanwhile countries with new LTE networks may have limited 4G availability but, due to their light loads, can support considerably fast speeds,” OpenSignal noted in the report.

The report suggests that the industry may have reached the limit to what current technology, spectral bandwidth and mobile economics can support on a national level. Citing previous reports, OpenSignal says the average LTE download speeds appear to have stalled at just over 45 Mbps.

“The industry is still waiting on that spark that will push speeds beyond 50 Mbps on a national level,” the report noted.

Sony And Facebook Enable Direct 3D Creator Sharing

Facebook introduced 3D posts earlier, but today the social network is rolling out gITF 2.0 compliance to support high-quality 3D content. The biggest beneficent are owners of Xperia smartphones with Android Oreo and 3D Creator app, who get easy sharing of their 3D art. Objects from Oculus Medium can also be posted with no hassle.

Compliance with gITF 2.0 brings support for textures, lighting, and realistic rendering techniques. The 3D portraits and objects are available both in the desktop version and the regular app, but Facebook Lite users will miss on the experience.

Web developers can enable 3D content on their website with a new Open Graph tag, while artists using authorized software can drag/drop 3D files on Facebook for a 3D post.

Phones that currently support this type of content are the Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact, along with the year-old XZ Premium, provided you received the update to Android Oreo.

Design and Display

It is imperative to know that a good design is usually not one of the key points of a budget smartphone. The Verykool SL5029 Bolt Pro is not any much of an attractive device, though this does not mean it is a bad looking one either. As expected it is made of plastic and features offscreen capacitive touch buttons with the camera flash and fingerprint sensor are all on the back panel.

The smartphone features a rather low end display even in the low budget section. It would have been much better to have an HD display, however, an FWVGA display is also a common occurrence in this category. On the Verykool SL5029 Bolt Pro, there is a 5.0-inch 854 X 480 pixels display with a pixel density of 196 ppi.

Battery and Camera

Many of Verykool’s budget smartphones comes with only about 2, 000mAh battery capacity. Same is actually featured on the Verykool SL5029 Bolt Pro smartphone. On normal usage, you should be able to squeeze a day of use from the smartphone.

On the snapping front, the smartphone is equipped with quite an impressive camera. For a budget smartphone an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera with flash on both sides is a  really nice addition.

Hardware and Software

Inside, you’ve got a low tier chipset from MediaTek taking care of things. To be specific, there is a 64-bit Quad-core MediaTek MT6737 processor alongside a Mali-T720 MP2 GPU in charge of graphics.

Still on the hardware, you also have a 1GB RAM on the smartphone with about 8GB of built-in storage expandable up to 64GB with a memory card. You are also greeted with an Android 7.0 Nougat from the box.

Pricing and Availability

The Verykool SL5029 Bolt Pro is available for sale and costs about 38, 000 naira and 43, 000 naira depending on your location and the deal.

AT&T Announces First Three Cities To Get Mobile 5G In 2018

In the first days of the new year, AT&T announced that 12 markets in the US will receive true mobile 5G in 2018. Today the carrier said that Dallas, Atlanta, and Waco, Texas will be the first three cities to experience true 5G. 9 more cities are expected to be announced in the coming months.

Igal Elbaz, Senior VP of Wireless Network Architecture and Design at AT&T, said the company contributed, conducted trials and “literally transformed the carrier’s network for the future”.

The 5G will be deployed based on 3GPP standards and operating on the mmWave spectrum. Once the system is rolling, AT&T expects transfer speeds to get up to multiple gigabits per second and to lower the latency over existing 4G.

Carriers and smartphone manufacturers are already working on devices that will provide the ultra-fast connection. Two weeks ago, Qualcomm announced that at least 18 OEMs and dozen telecoms, including AT&T, announced plans to commercialize 5G mobile phones by 2019.
