AMMAN Plots to Deepen Financial Inclusion

The Association of Mobile Money Agents in Nigeria (AMMAN) is strategising to deepen financial inclusion in the country as it set out to host its second annual conference.

At a press briefing recently in Lagos, the association identified gains made so far in deepening financial inclusion rate in the country but stated that much more still need to be done in the area of awareness to ensure that all Nigerians are financially included by 2020.

“We are trying to place our role to achieve the target of the Federal Government that by 2020, 80 percent of Nigeria will be financially included. Agents have a whole lot of role to play because our network structure is very important for the realisation of the target,” said Victor Olojo, national president, AMMAN.

“AMMAN is also looking at ways to tap into opportunities in the insurance industry where agents can issue third party insurance,” Olojo said.

He urged the Federal Government to make use of mobile agents in the disbursement of its social intervention funds to the unemployed Nigerians, stressing it will help deepen mobile money penetration in the country.

Also speaking to journalists, Jafaru Anudu, member-advisory , AMMAN said that poor publicity has remained the biggest challenge the industry is facing, while calling on the government to create awareness and educate Nigerians on the importance of mobile money.

“Players in the financial industry are yet to understand the role of mobile money agents in the country’s financial space,” Anudu said.

He called on the businesses and Nigerians to embrace the mobile money platform to in rendering services to rural communities.

The conference with the theme ‘Spurring Mobile Money and Agency Banking Activities: Opportunity Option for Financial Inclusion Growth in Nigeria’ will proffer solutions to the challenges besetting the penetration of the country’s financial inclusion rate.

The conference is schedule to hold on 24th of November at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) exhibition hall, Alausa-Lagos.

Key note speakers at the event are Temitope Akinfadeyi, head-financial inclusion secretariat, development finance department, Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayinka David West, academic director, Lagos Business School and Akinyemi Ashade, commissioner of finance, Lagos State.
