LASG, Network Operators to Clash Over Illegal Masts

A clash between Lagos State and telecommunication companies (telcos) is imminent, as the government is to dismantle masts and towers ‘illegally’ erected by network operators across the state.

Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial with a population estimated at 21 million people, has the highest number of subscribers to telecommunication services.

Aside from major network operators like MTN, Airtel, 9Mobile and Globacom, several other service providers have their masts, towers and base receiver stations scattered across Lagos, a development that led to creation of Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) to check indiscriminate deployment of masts and other infrastructure.

Babajide Odekunle, the general manager LASIMRA says the agency is beginning a state-wide enforcement of laws guiding deployment of telecom infrastructure and all found to have been erected without recourse to the laws are to be decommissioned.

According to Odekunle, the inspection will focus on standard compliance audit of base transceiver station, masts and towers.

This, he says is to ensure orderly deployment of these infrastructure by mobile network operators.

The exercise, he says will equally enable the agency to develop comprehensive database of telecommunications cell sites including towers and masts. BUSINESSDAY.
