Senate Lauds MainOne’s Data Centre Capacity to Achieve ICT Objectives

In view of Nigeria’s efforts to meet its global objectives in information and communications technology (ICT), MainOne’s data centre has been applauded for setting global standards and helping the government deepen ICT knowledge in the country.

The commendation was made when the Senate Committee on Information and Communications Technology and Cybercrime led by its chairman, Senator Buhari Abdulfatai paid a courtesy visit to MainOne’s Data Center, MDXi in Lagos on Thursday, 13 July, 2017.

The committee said the purpose of the visit was in fulfilment of its pledge to work with relevant agencies to ensure that Nigeria meets its ICT objectives.

During the visit, the committee members who were taken on a tour of the data centre facility, acknowledged the capacity available on MainOne’s submarine system and data center, which it said represents the most significant infrastructure of its kind in Nigeria.

With MainOne’s capacity, the committee stated, the country’s broadband penetration rate can increase beyond the 21 percent reported by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) given the rising consumption levels for data and connectivity services.

Senator Abdulfatai noted that delay in licensing Infrastructure Companies (InfraCos) and deploying network infrastructure after licensing posed a major threat to the achievement of the nation’s technology goals which largely depends on broadband infrastructure to be provided by InfraCos.

He however assured that the Nigerian senate will do all within its powers to facilitate ICT/broadband development and give legal substance to ICT policies including the National Broadband

The senate chairman also reiterated the importance of having Nigerian institutions host data locally within the country in order to ensure national security, drive job growth, improve the quality of online services and guarantee Nigerian’s participation in the emerging global digital transformation.

Funke Opeke, MainOne’s chief executive officer lauded the senate committee’s efforts in ensuring the development of ICT across the country through its support of homegrown enterprises and called for legislation especially in the areas that will positively impact on infrastructure development including possible interventions to address the high cost of capital crippling telecoms companies which has significantly slowed down new infrastructure projects in Nigeria.

She further stated that what is needed is bridging the gnawing gaps in the ICT industry.

“Nigerian content is arguably the most globally recognized African content today, but South Africa and Kenya are perceived as leaders in Africa because of the infrastructural gaps in the country. Ma

inOne has made significant investments in ICT infrastructural development in Nigeria and West Africa and will continue to do so, but we require full government support to enable the ICT industry in Nigeria surpass other countries,” Opeke said.
