Lagos Deputy Gov Tasks Muslim Leaders On Peaceful Co-existence, Religious Harmony

By Lucy Osuizigbo

Lagos  -   The Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule on Sunday urged Muslim leaders to continue to be at the forefront of ensuring peaceful co-existence,  understanding and religious harmony.

Adebule made the call at the 2017 Ramadan Lecture of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria (ADS), Lagos Branch, in Lagos.

She said that by their position, religious leaders in the society had great influence on  individuals and groups.

“I urge you to remember our state and the nation in prayers; our nation is in dire need of prayers at this challenging time with so many killings, terrorism, kidnapping and other vices.

“We can also see what is happening around the world; the activities of ISIS and Boko Haram are alien to Islam because Islam is about peace and love.

“But, we will continue to pray so that God who has the solution to all problems, will intervene and help restore peace to our homes, state, country and the world,’’ she said.

In his lecture entitled: “Religious Persecution and the Muslims’’, Sheikh Abdur-Rahman Ahmad, the National Chief Missioner of ADS, said that all religions suffer persecution due to environmental and peer pressure.

Ahmad urged Muslims to be steadfast and adhere to the tenents of Islam to scale through life’s troubles and persecution.

Also speaking, Alhaji Femi Okunnu, National Chairman, ADS, decried the high rate of suicide in the country due to economic hardship and hopelessness.

Okunnu urged Nigerians to shun the act of suicide as it was a sin, adding that anyone who committed suicide would not enter heaven.

In his remarks, Alhaji Ligali Agbomeji, Lagos Chairman, ADS, said that the month of Ramadan called for sober reflection, forgiveness and perseverance in prayers solidarity with the less privileged.
